Second Fondant Attempt....

First Fondant cake Adventure...

Wish I had a pic, but working on getting it...

Where should I start... My first fondant cake was a DISASTER. About 3 years ago, some friends and I decided to make a wedding cake from scratch (3 tiered). With all the great ideas running through out minds, we went to the store and bought everything we thought we needed. Things from cake pans to rolled fondant and color, lol... We got to the apartment, baked the cakes, Thought it would be nice to bake a different type of cake on each tier (sponge , pound and a regular cake) with different fondant colors. HAHA... And the fun adventure began.

Baked each cake off from different recipes gotten online (never tested). With all cakes made, looking as awful as can be, we still continued and tried covering it with fondant. "NOTE: None of us had ever worked with fondant or knew how to work with fondant." We tried coloring it with various colors to get one we liked (but that never came to reality). Covered the cake without a crumb coat (wonder how it would have worked). After all the trial and errors, with continuous cracking of the fondant, we covered d cake... NOT individually but as a whole... LOLLL... WHY didnt just google it...

After the disater, all I could do after, was laugh and take several pictures for future referral and laughter.

PIC COMING SOON.....

Keyword: RUM!!!

Just discovered a great way to use up cake scrap and rum to make a great dessert. Its called Rum Balls. Sure its not new to some but I recently discovered it and have falling in-love with its' simplicity.

I don't have a recipe, just eyeballed the ingredients till it comes together and tasted like its name. Taste of the rum maybe mild or strong, just depend on the people consuming it. The balls are normally rolled in melted chocolate and topped with anything (like nuts).

Should start experimenting with different liquors and try getting a recipe together.

Will post the recipe when I finalize it.

Finished Dead Dough

Dead Dough (Decorative Bread)
Hey,

Finally finished my piece today. I had specks of flour showing from rolling and shaping, so sprayed it with Food Lustre, which gives it the shine.

YES, its bread.

This piece is made from dead dough which is like edible play dough and used mainly for  bread showpieces. Made from regular bread ingredients like flour, salt, sugar,  syrup (in place of water) and food spices (depending on the color needed). For instance, the black dough was made with dark cocoa powder, which gives it the color; yellow was made with turmeric; Red with beet powder; and so on.

The most frustrating part of the piece was weaving (red and black net in the center). You have to work quickly before the dough dries. If that happens, its starts to crack or sometimes breaks, which means you have to try replacing the broken piece without destroying what you have already done or you just start all over (I did like 3 times). Easy components were the base, sun and the flowers & roses... The leaves, flowers and roses were really easy, mainly because I found a way of making 2 roses out of 1.

In-case you were wondering, I stuck the pieces on with syrup and let it dry over the weekend. It still has to dry some more but once its dry, it a showpiece that will last a lifetime.

Artistic Side

This week in Bread Class, we worked with Dead doughs. Never heard of it until a few weeks ago, but quite intresting I must say. We were meant to gather ideas, bring a drawing/ picture of the idea and present it to our chef.

I Googled "dead dough' and printed anything that looks intresting. Settled for a sketching I saw on another blog and used the little creative side I was given to bring it to life.

Pictures coming soon...

About...

Hello All,

WELCOME to Me BLOG....

Really something I should have started a while back, but better late than never...

This blog was made to share my pictures and get feedback on my baked product. Not a writer, so do not expect me to write paragraphs and paragraphs of stuff.

Wanted to do the Julie and Julia thing but based on a baking/pastry book. Still contemplating because everyone seems to be on a diet nowadays, kinda have to know where I will be dumping the baked products. When that's in place will set a deadline and start.

Will keep you guys posted. GTG... "Got to go"
